One of the most
traditional Spanish dolls is called MARIQUITA PÉREZ. Girls have played
with her during decades.
In the beginning
it was a doll made of china or cardboard and rags .For more children it
was a luxury and this is why imagination was so important .A tissue bag
filled with rags could be the head. Threads for spinning made the hair,
the eyes two old buttons, a painted mouth ….if that was wrapped with a
blanket ,it was a baby .If you added a body ,in which there were
sticks instead of arms and legs (if the doll was a grown up child ).It
was a game played at home , in the courtyards by brothers and sisters
never in the street ,all the year along, and not necessarily with a
song.
Girls learned sewing
at school .As soon as they had learned the minimums
,they made their own doll, with a rags head tied to a piece of tissue
where you could insert your hand as in a puppet.
